A bunch of former Seattle Seahawks are currently working in the NFL. The situation is a little different from that in the past decade-plus. For years, Seattle only needed two quarterbacks, really, Russell Wilson and Geno Smith. A backup was rarely needed to enter the game. That meant most of the quarterbacks on the roster were stuck on the team.
One who came and went a bit was Sean Mannion. He had three stints with the team, and as recently as 2023. He never played in a game and mostly spent time on the practice squad. He clearly understood what the then-head coach Pete Carroll was trying to teach, though, especially offensive concepts versus defensive ones.
That is evident in the sharp rise that Mannion has had in his post-playing and current coaching career. In 2024, he was an offensive assistant with the Green Bay Packers, and in 2025, he was promoted to quarterbacks coach. This week, Mannion took a much bigger leap.
Former Seattle Seahawks QB Sean Mannion hired by the Philadelphia Eagles
He was hired as the offensive coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles. In other words, he went from being on Seattle's practice squad just over two seasons ago to being one of the most important coaches for a perennial playoff contender. That is a stunning change.
The question is whether Mannion is ready. The Eagles had several interviews with potential OCs, but many of those coordinators seemed to take themselves out of the running. Philly is only a season removed from winning the Super Bowl and still has lots of talent, so why so many coaches wouldn't want to take the job is a mystery.
Quarterback Jalen Hurts does work best in a system that runs the ball quite a bit, and allows him to run, too, but no one can know exactly what kind of system Mannion would run. He's never overseen an offense and has never been a play-caller. He is as much of a mystery as why people didn't want the job he just took.
He could be set up for failure. Philadelphia Eagles fans can be extremely harsh on coaches and players, and Sean Mannion is not going to catch a break there. Philly appears to be a sound organization, but the offensive coordinator search was very strange. Maybe more experienced coaches have a better feeling about the job than Mannion would have.
The twist is that the Seattle Seahawks might soon be looking for their own new offensive coordinator. Current OC Klint Kubiak might get an offer to be the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders or the Arizona Cardinals. One thing is certain: Seattle won't be thinking of bringing back Sean Mannion for a fourth stint.
