Former Seahawks starter may be running out of time with new team after latest move

It was seemingly unrelated.

The Miami Dolphins blew things up a bit this offseason. The team made lots of moves (changing quarterbacks from Tua Tagovailoa to Malik Willis, the most notable one) in an effort to get younger, faster, and better. That won't happen this coming season, and that could affect one former Seattle Seahawks starter.

Linebacker Jordyn Brooks was a first-round draft pick for Seattle in 2020. He was good, but played with the Seahawks more like a second-round choice than a first-rounder. He wasn't transformative.

At 28 years old and with a rebuilding team, Brooks could now be the odd man out with the Dolphins due to Miami signing center Aaron Brewer. The team isn't looking to spend lots of money on somewhat aging players, and Brooks is entering the final year of his deal.

That the Dolphins signed Brewer a few weeks after extending running back De'Von Achane likely means the organization doesn't want to spend much more. Brooks getting an extension now seems unlikely. Potentially, he could be traded so that Miami could use some more draft capital next year.

The linebacker is already the second-highest paid player on the roster in 2026, but he only makes a relatively modest (in NFL terms) $10.8 million. No matter how Miami views Brooks, and the organization appears to like him quite a bit, it also isn't going to give the LB a huge range beginning in 2027.

To be sure, Jordyn Brooks is still a very efficient linebacker. He stays healthy, and, therefore, available for nearly all games, led the league in combined tackles last season with 183, and solo tackles with 99, and was named First-Team All-Pro. In each of the past three seasons, he has had at least three sacks.

Can he continue to replicate his elite play from last season? That is a question the Miami Dolphins need to ask. If Brooks were an edge rusher and just came off the year he had last season, he'd be a no-doubt extension candidate. Playing inside linebacker makes him less so.

Is there any chance that Jordyn Brooks returns to the Seattle Seahawks? Not likely. Ernest Jones IV is a fantastic player and long-term starter for head coach Mike Macdonald's team, and while his off-ball linebacker partner, which will most likely be Drake Thomas, isn't fully proven, Seattle seems to like the players it already has.

Still, 12s would probably welcome Brooks back openly. Plus, just imagine the damage he and Ernest Jones could do in Macdonald's scheme. If Seattle could get Brooks for a third-round choice, the deal would be worth pursuing.
