Geno Smith has all the right words Seahawks' Kenneth Walker cannot say
By Lee Vowell
Kenneth Walker III was sick. After coming down with flu-like symptoms ahead of Week 7, the Seattle Seahawks star running back was downgraded to questionable. The chances of him missing Week 7 versus the Atlanta Falcons were slim, but how much he could be used was certainly concerning. A handful of plays would not allow Walker to reach peak efficiency.
To be sure, he was probably still rotated out a bit more than normal with backup running back Zach Charbonnet. Charbonnet ended up with 33 snaps to Walker's 28, but what Walker was able to accomplish in his reps was astonishing. No, he didn't run for 100 yards, but he sparkled on several runs and one incredible catch.
The difference between Walker and Charbonnet (and to be fair to Charbonnet, most other running backs in the NFL) is Walker's explosiveness. Once he gets into the open field, he can outrun nearly any defender while still making quick moves to elude tacklers. He can grind out yards at times, but he is special because of his ability to create splash plays.
Geno Smith has the perfect words to say about Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker after Week 7 victory
In Week 7 against the Falcons, Walker had two such plays. One was his second quarter 20-yard touchdown run when he broke right, cut through a hole, and sprinted to the corner of the end zone. There was little chance of a Falcons player, and he was only tackled as he dove into the end zone by a desperate grab by an Atlanta defender.
Walker's second scoring play was even more impressive. He ran a route out of the backfield as quarterback Geno Smith stepped up in the pocket to avoid the Falcons' pass rush. Smith threw the ball a slight bit in front of Walker. No worries, though, as Walker was able to leap for the ball and reel in the catch. The play would have been impressive if a wide receiver had caught it, let alone a running back.
Walker finished with 93 total yards on 16 touches, averaging 4.9 yards per rush and catching both his pass targets. He did this while still feeling the effects of a severe cold or the flu and also his 24th birthday. After the game, Geno Smith had the perfect words about his teammate.
When asked in the post-game press conference about how sick Walker was, Smith said, "Yeah, he was sick today, man. Two touchdowns on his birthday, that was sick...Obviously, he was under the weather. A little bit of his flu game today on his birthday. I think that’s spectacular...I know he wasn’t feeling his best, but to come out and do what he did on his birthday, I thought that was excellent."
Walker answered a few questions at his locker after the game but was clearly exhausted and did not go on at length. He did say, "I felt like just everything was kind of hard, being sick and everything," and that he was happy the team won, but Smith likely spoke for Walker in his comments. What is certain is the Seahawks might not have won in Week 7 had Walker not been able to play.
