The play should have never happened. The Seattle Seahawks had run out of timeouts and had the ball third and 15 from the Atlanta Falcons 31-yard line. At best, Seattle should have been able to throw a ball near the sidelines to get a few extra yards for a potential Jason Myers field goal. Instead, something quite different happened.

Geno Smith dropped back, and threw a dart to DK Metcalf, who had split the Falcons secondary in a way that Atlanta should have never allowed. Surrounded by four Atlanta players, Metcalf came down with the ball, took a hit, and still held on for a touchdown. It was a perfect throw by Smith and a perfect catch by Metcalf.

The play followed a first half where Atlanta likely should have been leading. They had cut the score to 10-7 and were beginning to establish a run game that Seattle seemed incapable of stopping. The Falcons likely threw a bit too much when they should have simply run over the Seahawks.

Still, the game could have been more in favor of Seattle. On another perfect pass from Smith to Metcalf in the first quarter, Metcalf had the ball hit his hands and bounce off. There was nothing Smith could have done differently on the play. Tyler Lockett would have made the catch probably, but Metcalf doesn't have the hands of Lockett.

He does have great size and strength, however. This helped as Metcalf bounced off of the Falcons on the 31-yard touchdown pass. But let's be real. The play was made by Smith. He placed the ball where only Metcalf could catch it and no Falcons had a chance to knock it down. It was the throw of a veteran quarterback who is fully in control of his powers.

Smith might not be the best quarterback in the league, but the disrespect he gets from many is unfair. Smith can win a lot of games. The pass to Metcalf proves that.
