The Seattle Seahawks have not gotten out of their own way at times this season, and that has pushed the team to 3-2 after a Week 5 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. The game was a physical and brutal contest that Seattle's NFC West rival seemed to want more.
Along the way, 49ers lineback Dre Greenlaw was kicked out after head-butting a helmet-less Ernest Jones on the sideline. That seemed to only serve to inspire San Francisco more, as they followed up the ejection with two sacks. San Fran was embarrassed by the blowout loss to Seattle last season, and they proved it on the field in Week 5.
Was the game somewhat ugly? Yes, but what a division game should be like. Neither team played perfectly, but both played like they might not against anyone else except the Los Angeles Rams.
Quick reactions from the Seattle Seahawks versus the San Francisco 49ers in Week 5
Social media will likely go mad over Sam Darnold
Darnold isn't going to be benched, no matter what you might read on your favorite social media services. Drew Lock is not going to replace him, and he shouldn't. Darnold has turned the ball over too much this season, and he led the NFL in turnovers last year, and that needs to stop. But he isn't going to be replaced currently, no matter what social media might tell you.
Zach Charbonnet cannot return soon enough
Emanuel Wilson has done a solid job in the games he's had to be RB1, but he fumbled early in the game and put his team in a difficult spot. He is also not a true RB1, but a solid RB2 at best. George Holani had to get reps, too, as the team only truly had two tailbacks, as Velus Jones Jr. is more of an emergency back.
Holani, however, fumbled twice and lost one in the end zone of Seattle that was recovered by the 49ers for a touchdown. Charbonnet hasn't fumbled in three seasons and is great in the red zone. No matter when Jadarian Price returns, Charbonnet should be RB1 for the rest of the season once he returns fully healthy.
Josh Jobe is a problem
Jobe was re-signed this offseason instead of Riq Woolen, who was the more expensive option. Jobe, though, has played worse with every passing game, and was absolutely consistently torched by wide receiver Mike Evans. Jobe looked on every play like Woolen did at his worst in the past few seasons. That can't continue, but Seattle doesn't really have another option to replace Jobe at this point.
Sadly, Jaxon Smith-Njigba is human
On the final Seahawks drive of the game, Sam Darnold was able to toss a third-down pass down the field that JSN would catch almost all the time, but he couldn't corral the ball. The pass was good enough, but the catch wasn't. Smith-Njigba still has to carry too much of the load with the passing offense, so when he fails to make a single play, it stands out more.
Ultimately, Seattle just wasn't good enough to win the game. Too many turnovers and crucial mistakes at the wrong time forced the team to 3-2. Next is the Denver Broncos on Thursday Night Football, and 3-3 is a real possibility.
