The Seattle Seahawks took several risks this past offseason, and one of those was letting cornerback Riq Woolen leave in free agency. The team thought it would be just fine with Josh Jobe and Devon Witherspoon, and then some creativity at cornerback. But in the preseason, some worry began, and after Week 3, definite concern should be had.
Against the Washington Commanders, a team playing with a backup quarterback, Jobe was rather abused by wide receiver Terry McLaurin. Jobe was only targeted four times, but gave up three completions for 46 yards, including a 30-yard-touchdown pass to McLaurin. His quarterback rating allowed was 152.1.
In anticipation that Seattle's cornerback group might not be as good as hoped, the team signed veteran cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and Trevon Diggs. Arnold can't play while being on the NFL's exempt list, as he faces felony charges from an incident this past offseason. Diggs was signed, released, and then signed to the practice squad.

That is where Diggs currently resides while getting acclimated to the Seattle defensive system. He was pretty good against the Kansas City Chiefs in preseason Week 3, but preseason games mean nothing, really. Diggs would still have to prove his worth in real games.
Could that come sooner rather than later after Jobe's Week 3 awfulness? Possibly not, but it should. Jobe, after all, entered a season for the first time in his career as the expected full-time starter. Through three games, the results have been trending in the wrong direction.
He was good in Week 1 against the New England Patriots, allowing three catches on four targets but for only 12 yards. He didn't give up a touchdown but had an interception. In Week 2 against the Arizona Cardinals, Jobe did give up a touchdown on a short pass, but only allowed 11 yards receiving overall. Then came Week 3 where he was a mess.
He's already allowed nearly as many touchdown passes this season as last (two compared to three), and is on pace to allow 11 for the season. That is obviously unacceptable. In the last two games, his quarterback rating allowed has been at least 112.5. Next for Seattle is the Los Angeles Chargers, with the capable Justin Herbert, and then the San Francisco 49ers and Brock Purdy.
That game could be a make-or-break one for Jobe. If he is poor against the Chargers and gets torched against the NFC West rival, the Seattle Seahawks might be forced to make a change. That would mean elevating Trevon Diggs, a former First-Team All-Pro who has been robbed of seasons with knee injuries, before Week 5 to see what he can do.
Something might need to happen. At least Jobe should get some help when safety Julian Love returns, but even with Love in Week 2, Jobe wasn't perfect. How well the cornerback plays in the next few games should be must-watch for Seahawks fans.
