Klint Kubiak should be grateful for Seahawks after shocking Derek Carr update

Every offensive coordinator in the NFL needs quality pieces to work with. The best scheme only works if the players are good enough to carry out the plan. New Seattle Seahawks OC Klint Kubiak should have a quarterback who can entirely run his design, making Seattle's offense efficient, if not explosive.

Kubiak is only 38 years old, but he has spent the last decade as a full-time offensive coach in the NFL. He was an offensive coordinator twice before joining Seattle: in 2021, he was the Minnesota Vikings' OC, and in 2024, he was the New Orleans Saints' OC.

The Saints got off to a promising start last season. The team scored more than 40 points in each of its first two games, but then injuries began to set in, and the offense was never the same. One player who was hurt a couple of times was quarterback Derek Carr. Carr is a good quarterback but never great.

Still, he has done well not turning the ball over too much over his career. In nearly half his seasons, he threw single-digit interceptions. Kubiak's offense relies on not turning the ball over, and Carr would have been a good fit. But Kubiak needed a job as the Saints' season went south, and the coaching staff was changed.

Had he hung on with New Orleans, he would have been forced to start over with an unproven quarterback. That is because Carr has a shoulder injury that would likely require him to miss the 2025 season. Instead of missing the year, the quarterback has decided to retire, according to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

In other words, Kubiak's move to the Seahawks has worked out even better than the coach probably imagined. Carr would have helped his offense be OK with New Orleans, but without Carr, the Saints' offense is doomed. Even though the problem might not have been his fault, Kubiak would have been blamed for this.

Instead, Kubiak gets to work with quarterback Sam Darnold with the Seahawks, a player he is familiar with since both also worked with the San Francisco 49ers in 2023. Darnold has hopefully learned to take fewer chances and allow Kubiak's design to do its magic.

The Saints are quite likely to not be good in 2025. The Seahawks could be one of the surprise teams of the league. Klint Kubiak is probably thankful to be working in Seattle after the latest Derek Carr news.
