New Seahawks signing is already on thin ice after 2025 NFL Draft

Still reshaping the roster.

The Seattle Seahawks had 11 picks in the 2025 NFL draft. This is a good number for a team still somewhat retooling from the last years of the Pete Carroll era, but too many for some veterans. To make room for the rookies, some veterans will need to go.

One of these could be tight end Noah Fant, who has skills as a receiver but always seems to underperform. He only had one touchdown reception in the last three seasons. That is terrible. Second-round pick Elijah Arroyo could push Fant off the roster.

Still, new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak likes to use his tight ends quite a bit, and keeping four on the active 53-man roster might not be a bad idea. Having two who are excellent receivers is even better.

Seahawks QB Drew Lock may be on thin ice following NFL Draft

One recent free agent signee should be nervous after the Seahawks chose quarterback Jalen Milroe in the third round, however. The team has already moved on from 2024 backup Sam Howell, and the recently signed Drew Lock could be next.

Lock was signed to a two-year deal, but is heavily laden with incentives. The contract could pay him up to $5 million, but only $2.25 million of that is guaranteed. He has no guaranteed money in 2026, and should he be released with a post-June 1 designation, the team would save $500,000.

Releasing Lock so soon after signing him and giving away $2 million is not usually the John Schneider way. Still, the general manager is facing a situation with his quarterback room unlike any season he has had since 2012. That was the year that Russell Wilson was drafted. Like Milroe, Wilson was taken in the third round.

Kubiak does have a history of having teams that have kept three quarterbacks on the active roster, and the Seahawks could possibly do that this coming season. But Kubiak does not make the roster decisions, of course. John Schneider does. Schneider does not have a history of keeping three QBs on the roster.

There could be a real battle for a quarterback roster spot in training camp. The assumption is that Milroe is a bit too raw to play much, and sitting a year behind presumed QB1 Sam Darnold (also a 2025 free agent acquisition) and Lock would do him good.

Milroe could surprise many pundits and show the short and mid-range accuracy that many do not think he has yet. Because of his elite athleticism, he will probably stand out in practices and preseason games. If he does show he can throw with accuracy and on time, he could become Darnold's backup. That would be terrible news for Drew Lock, though.
