Overlooked pass-rusher already has almost no chance of cracking Seahawks roster

Once again at a loss.

Seattle Seahawks minicamp will have no drama as far as healthy star players not showing up. The three-day event will be a place for players on the fringes of the 90-man roster to prove they belong on the final 53-man version in late August.

One of those is edge rusher Jamie Sheriff, an undrafted free agent in 2024, who became well-known to 12s in the preseason of his first year after he was quite effective at pressuring quarterbacks. In three games, he had multiple pressures in each, including 2.5 sacks. The 6'2" and 265-pound South Alabama prospect might have become a key piece of the rotation.

The issue is that preseason has so far been the best part of Sheriff's brief career. He didn't make the Seattle roster in 2024, was picked up by the Carolina Panthers and played 17 snaps in Week 1, but was then almost immediately released. That was the only regular-season action he has seen.

Seattle Seahawks edge rusher Jamie Sheriff will probably find himself on the practice squad once again

He's spent the last couple of seasons on Seattle's practice squad, and he will almost certainly go back to that in August, unless another team takes a chance on the unproven pass rusher. Sheriff likely deserves that opportunity.

His issue with the Seahawks is that he is buried on the roster behind DeMarcus Lawrence, Uchenna Nwosu, Derick Hall, and Dante Fowler. Seattle could keep five to six edge rushers, partly depending on where they see second-year pro Rylie Mills playing moving forward, but Sheriff might lose ground to other UDFAs.

Jared Ivey seems to be well-liked by the Seattle Seahawks coaching staff and was a UDFA in 2025. He appeared in two games on defense last season, and though he didn't record any statistics, it is telling that Seattle gave Ivey a chance to appear in real games but not Jamie Sheriff.

Connor O'Toole, a 6'4" and 250-pound edge rusher with great raw athleticism, was also an undrafted free agent last year who played during regular-season games. He appeared in four, including 17 snaps in Week 9. He didn't record a statistic either, but he probably has a leg up on a roster spot over Sheriff.

Among Sheriff, O'Toole, and Ivey, two of the three, at least, could be released when final roster cuts are made. Sheriff likely has the least chance of making the roster. A Seahawks fan might wonder what he could do if given a chance, though, but that might need to happen with another team.
