Pete Carroll is a loyal guy. That is part of the reason he lost his job with the Seattle Seahawks. During the team's digression from 2015 to 2023, Carroll held on to assistant coaches like Clint Hurtt and Shane Waldron for far too long. Loyalty is a great trait in a human being, but not so much in a football coach.
Assistant coaches knew, though, that Carroll would have their backs if there was an issue. That might have been bad for Carroll and, ultimately, the assistant coach, but at least there was a go-between. The head coach was respected because he was not false and would do his best to make sure everyone was treated fairly.
Carroll might have earned loyalty back as well. Coaches might be more willing to work for him because they know where he stands. One of those coaches could be current Seahawks defensive backs coach Karl Scott. Carroll's new team, the Las Vegas Raiders, has requested to interview Scott for the defensive coordinator spot with the Raiders.
Pete Carroll is interested in bringing Seahawks defensive backs coach Karl Scott to the Raiders
To be fair, Scott has earned a promotion. While he is only 39 years old, he is extremely well-respected. So much so that when Mike Macdonald took over for Carroll with Seattle, the only coach Macdonald chose to retain was Scott. Under the DB coach, Devon Witherspoon has developed into a Pro Bowl, and others, such as Josh Jobe, have outperformed their contracts.
The coach has also worked with brilliant head coaches before. He worked under Nick Saban at the University of Alabama from 2018 through 2020, for instance. Early in his career, Scott worked with Skip Holtz at Lousiana State. In other words, Scott knows his stuff and has spent too much time as a position coach. He needs to be promoted to a coordinator position.
Scott is not the only coach who has ties to the Seahawks that Carroll is reportedly interested in. Interestingly, the Raiders are also interested in potentially hiring Miami Dolphins quarterback coach Darrell Bevell as their new offensive coordinator. Bevell was the Seattle OC from 2011 through 2017.
12s will remember Bevell the most for his bad play call at the end of Super Bowl XLIX when quarterback Russell Wilson threw an interception instead of the Seahawks handing the ball to running back Marshawn Lynch. The loss changed the culture of the Seahawks forever.
