Dak Prescott to Seahawks rumor flies in the face of all logic

The Seattle Seahawks have a quarterback already, but some think they might add Dak Prescott.

The Seattle Seahawks do not need a quarterback. They already have two signed through 2025. Geno Smith has been a productive starter in the last two years while offseason acquisition Sam Howell was a full-time starter for the Washington Commanders in 2023. One of them is going to be Seattle's starting quarterback next year and likely beyond.

What the Seahawks don't need is to add Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott to the team. Still, rumors continue to swirl that a Prescott to Seattle move next offseason is a real possibility. It isn't.

In a recent article by Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox, Seattle is among eight (so a quarter of the league) potential landing spots for the Cowboys quarterback in 2025 free agency. The Los Angeles Rams are also on Knox's list for some reason. LA's quarterback Matthew Stafford is signed through 2026, and his dead cap is nearly $50 million in 2025 so it's unclear how the Rams could afford Prescott and Stafford.

Dak Prescott is not going to end up with the Seattle Seahawks in 2025 free agency

The biggest reason Prescott won't come to the Seahawks also has to do with money. Seattle cannot afford the quarterback next offseason. Even if Seattle released Geno Smith and saved $25 million, Seattle would still only have $28 million, according to Spotrac.

Of course, Seattle would not spend all of their cap space on one player. Plus, Prescott is not going to sign for $28 million a season. That number is more likely to be well north of $40 million. Adding Prescott would gut Seattle's future cap space and not allow the team to add quality players to build around the quarterback.

Let's also be real about Dak Prescott not being the savior of any franchise. He seems like a good guy and he is a good quarterback, but he also has a record of 2-5 in playoff games, and in his last two postseason games, he has thrown two interceptions in each. He has a quarterback rating of 89.3 or worse in four of his playoff games.

Prescott is going to win a lot of regular season games, but he hasn't proven once his team gets into the postseason that he can elevate the players around him. Maybe that argument can be made about Geno Smith as well, but Smith has had far fewer chances to see how he will perform in the playoffs. He has played in one as Seattle's starter and went 25 for 35 for 253 yards, two touchdowns, and a pick with a quarterback rating of 98.9.

Even with a good 2024 and 2025, Smith would still be a cheaper option than Prescott. So would Sam Howell who is only 23 years old. Seattle cannot afford Prescott so he won't be coming to play for the Seahawks, but Geno Smith or Sam Howell will be in 2026.
