Former Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson's sad saga might not yet be done

Russell Wilson's post-Seahawks career has been ugly and could get even worse.

Poor Russell Wilson. That is meant to be genuine as well. He is the best quarterback in Seattle Seahawks history. He forced his way out of Seattle, for all intents and purposes, but he likely wishes now he never did that. Currently, on his third team in four seasons, he might not last long there either.

In Wilson's first two seasons after leaving Seattle, he played with the Denver Broncos. His first year was atrocious and an extreme let-down for Broncos fans (not that we care much about that) and that included Geno Smith and the Seahawks beating Wilson and the Broncos in Week 1.

Seattle benefited from Wilson's bad year as they got a high draft pick. The days of Wilson being useful to Seattle are now gone, however. The trade value was gone after last year's draft. Most of the players the Seahawks added in the trade are gone from Seattle now as well.

Former Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson might be done in the NFL

This offseason Wilson was let go by the Broncos even though his contract carried a lot of dead money. He signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers and was the presumed starter. Then Wilson hurt his calf and missed the first two games of the season. Justin Fields, who the Steelers also added this offseason. has replaced Wilson and led Pittsburgh to a 2-0 start.

Fields is the younger quarterback and likely has more potential. That might make Wilson expendable. He could be traded or - even worse for him - released outright during the season.

That is what ESPN's Dan Graziano thinks anyway. In a recent article about players who could be trade candidates, he has Wilson listed among the quarterbacks. Graziano writes, "Wilson has a no-trade clause, which means he'd get to pick his spot (or be released) in this hypothetical scenario. And it has been several years since he has shown anything that would make a team want to trade for him. But if someone became desperate, a move could be in play."

Ouch. That implies that should Wilson be released and the Steelers go with Justin Fields as QB1 then possibly Wilson does not find a home at all. That would be quite the fall from a quarterback who three years ago tried to get the Seahawks' general manager and head coach fired.

Graziano's potential landing spot for Wilson is Miami. That makes sense as the Dolphins' QB1, Tua Tagovailoa, suffered his third career concussion in Week 2 and could be out for a long time. A 25-year-old Wilson would be a great fit for the Dolphins scheme as he threw an excellent deep ball. Wilson is now almost 36 years old and he might be washed up.
