For most of the Seattle Seahawks Week 2 victory over the New England Patriots, quarterback Geno Smith had little help from his running game. Running back Zach Charbonnet doesn't have the shimmy that Kenneth Walker III does but Walker missed the game with an oblique injury. For most of the second half, Seattle only had seven rushing yards.

This meant the game had to be Smith's to win or lose. To be fair, at times he did not get much help from his receivers. Near the end of the game, tight end Noah Fant dropped a ball near the Patriots 10-yard line that he might have run in for a touchdown. DK Metcalf also had a couple of drops and so did Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Metcalf and JSN had fantastic games overall, though.

Still, Smith persevered. He finished by completing 33 of 44 passes for 327 yards and a touchdown in Seattle's 23-20 overtime victory over the Patriots. He was sacked three times, but the offensive line held up well late in the game when Seattle needed points. This is especially true for right tackle Stone Forsythe who is Seattle's third-string right tackle.

Geno Smith is the biggest reason the Seahawks defeated the Patriots in Week 2

For the offense to be forced to be so one-dimensional and Smith still to be so efficient is almost miraculous. New England has a very good defense and a decent pass rush. The game would have looked different had Walker been able to play to help Smith but that wasn't the case.

In the game-winning overtime drive, Smith coolly moved around the pocket and found receivers. Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb did call an excellent overtime drive, to be sure, but Smith had to execute the drive while not knowing if Charbonnet was going to be able to do anything running the ball.

For those who think Smith is not a good quarterback, examples like Week 2 are making it more difficult for them to have that argument. The quarterback led the NFL in game-winning drives and fourth quarter comebacks last year, and he got his first of each in Week 2 this year.

Smith is a good quarterback. A QB of lesser quality would not have been able to win the game. Seattle has a real chance to make the playoffs this year because of Geno Smith and that should not be discounted.
