Geno Smith's first quarter interception versus Dolphins will drive some 12s crazy

Geno Smith has been a solid quarterback for the last two-plus seasons but some Seahawks fans don't think so.

Geno Smith is a good quarterback to be sure. Does he make mistakes? Yes. Every quarterback does. Still, some Seattle Seahawks fans will forever believe he cannot lead Seattle to greatness.

Late in the first quarter, with Smith backed up in his own territory, Smith threw a pass on third down to Zach Charbonnet that was a bit high and ended up in the hands of the Miami Dolphins. The ball did hit Charbonnet's hands, but the pass was too high. The mistake was Smith's fault.

This led to a Miami field goal which made the score 10-3. The problem was that the mistake by Smith would give fuel to the fire by some 12s that Smith is not a good quarterback. This is the case even though he led the NFC in touchdown passes in 2022 as well the league in completion percentage. Last year, Smith led the league in game-winning drives and fourth quarter comebacks.

Still, Smith immediately made up for his mistake on the Seahawks' ensuing drive by hitting an open DK Metcalf for a 73-yard touchdown pass. This was Metcalf's second explosive play of the season which is likely an indication that new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb knows a thing or two about scheming receivers open deep.

Smith still has to be the quarterback that finds them and throws them open. For all the disrespect that Smith gets, he is a top-five quarterback in terms of quarterback rating in 2024. He will probably continue that trend because he 1) has the talent, and 2) has a better offensive coordinator than he has had in his first two seasons with the Seahawks.

Smith is good. People will need to get used to that idea. The Seahawks are better off having Smith as the quarterback.
