The Seattle Seahawks have seemingly interviewed 200 people for their head coaching vacancy. While that number is a bit of hyperbole, the fact remains that Seattle's number of coaching interviews to replace Pete Carroll is in the double digits. According to a report from NFL insider Ian Rapoport, however, Seahawks fans might have to wait a while longer before Seattle names its new coach.

Four teams remain in the NFL playoffs and league rules say that while a team is still playing their coaches cannot be interviewed by other teams. Seattle did already once interview Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, but Seattle cannot interview again until after the Lions lose. That could happen as early as Sunday when Detroit plays the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game.

But Rapoport says there is another coach involved in one of Sunday's games that the Seahawks might strongly be interested in. That is Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald. Seattle has not yet interviewed Macdonald because when Pete Carroll was let go as head coach in Seattle the team made the move so late in the week that the window to interview Macdonald was fairly short.

Seattle Seahawks might not name a head coach for two more weeks

While other teams had coaching vacancies, too, most of that has worked out well for the Seahawks. Every other team except for the Washington Commanders has hired a new head coach and most of the candidates were not high on Seattle's list. The Commanders, however, seem in good shape to hire Johnson from the Lions.

If that happens, the Seahawks are the only team remaining with a vacancy and would have the pick of whichever coach they want. That very likely could be Macdonald. If the Ravens lose to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, Seattle is free to interview Macdonald. If the Ravens win and make the Super Bowl, the Seahawks would have to wait until after the Super Bowl to interview Macdonald. 12s might be waiting a couple of more weeks before learning who the next head coach will be.

Macdonald has been the Ravens DC for two years, but he also worked with the Ravens as a defensive assistant from 2013 through 2020. Under Macdonald's direction in 2023, the Ravens led the NFL in turnovers created (31), yards per play allowed (4.6), and points allowed per game (16.5). Macdonald knows how to use the talent given to him and make his defenses better. Hiring Macdonald would be a brilliant move by the Seahawks and should make most 12s happy.
