One Seahawks issue popping up in the preseason could doom the entire season
By Lee Vowell
The Seattle Seahawks have won one and lost one through the first two games of the 2024 preseason. What does that mean? Literally nothing. The important part is how the players are adapting to the new offensive and defensive schemes and what indications fans can glean that the new schemes will be better than the ones under former head coach Pete Carroll.
So far, Seattle's defense looks a lot better, but this is mostly based on watching backups versus presumed backups in the preseason. 12s might have learned more from how Seattle played against the Titans in two joint practices. At least then Seattle's starters were facing the Titans' starters.
One potentially major problem has popped up in the preseason games and the issue comes from an unlikely source. In fact, the problem was one reason Seattle lost to Tennessee.
Seahawks kicker Jason Myers is struggling with making extra points this preseason
The issue stems from kicker Jason Myers missing two extra points so far in the preseason, one in each game. Myers hasn't suddenly lost his ability to make kicks. He made a 50-yarder against the Titans. The talent is still there, but something is amiss with the execution on extra points.
The Seahawks lost to the Titans 16-15 on a late field goal. Had Myers made an extra point earlier in the game, the best Tennessee could have done was tie the game. Again, the outcome of preseason games is meaningless, but if Myers continues to miss extra points in the regular season, there is going to be cause for great concern.
Last year, Myers made all 33 of his extra-point attempts and he only missed one in 2022. Between 2018 and 2021, though, Myers missed at least three extra-pointers each year. In his rookie season of 2015, he missed seven. So far this preseason, Myers is one of three on extra-point chances.
Seattle is expected to play a lot of close games this season. The defense should be better with Macdonald but neither side of the ball is so great that it will be much better than most teams Seattle faces. This should mean the importance of Myers making extra points is going to be magnified. Should he struggle in that area, the Seahawks might need to look for a new kicker sooner rather than later.
