Rumors of Pete Carroll's demise have been greatly exaggerated
By Lee Vowell
This week, CBS Sports posted an article with the headline, "Pete Carroll hasn't communicated with Seahawks at all despite advisor role". Here is the secret that all Seattle Seahawks fans know. Carroll isn't really as much an advisor as he is simply getting paid for 2024 because that is the final year of his contract.
The stranger part would be for Carroll, the former head coach of the team for 14 years, to have any input into what new head coach Mike Macdonald is trying to do. Seattle needed a change, especially in the defensive direction of the team. Carroll was once a great defensive coach but he proved he couldn't adjust well over recent seasons. Macdonald has a different approach.
Every new head coach needs a clean start and not feel as if they have the long-term former coach overlooking their shoulder. Macdonald would not have wanted that. Carroll shouldn't have wanted to do that.
Former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll has a new gig
The Seahawks had to give Carroll some kind of role for this year. He wasn't technically fired because he had a guaranteed contract for several years and the final year was this year. The organization gave him the title of advisor because that was the easiest route. He wasn't going to advise and he also wasn't going to have any kind of real input into anything.
Carroll has reportedly taken a job where he had his greatest college success, USC, but not directly with the football program. Instead, Carroll will teach classes in some subject matter that he hasn't revealed. If one is a student at USC, they likely would be lucky to have Carroll as an instructor. He is full of energy, well-spoken, and studies his subject matter.
What Carroll did not need to be is a coach for the Seattle Seahawks. His defenses were basically terrible the last few seasons and his team was stuck in mediocrity. He is the best head coach in Seattle's history, but a change was needed. Mike Macdonald did not need Carroll to advise him. Still, both Macdonald, the Seahawks, and Carroll should all be better off in the future.
