Round 3 Picks

Round 3 Pick 70: Luke Musgrave, TE, Oregon State

We talked in the past about the Seahawks not just trying to fix the leaky 2022 defense, but also building a Super Bowl-worthy offense. Luke Musgrave would be a massive weapon for Geno Smith. Musgrave is one of the “core four” tight ends in this draft, a truly special class for the position. The Seahawks, who already have Will Dissly and Noah Fant under contract for 2023, bring in a unique weapon from Oregon State in Musgrave. At 6’6″ and 249 lbs, Musgrave brings massive size and near-wide receiver speed to the tight end position.

The biggest knock on Musgrave is more of a lack of time on the field than anything. Musgrave played in only two games in 2022 before a knee injury ended his season. In those two games, however, Musgrave was a beast with 11 receptions, 169 yards, and a touchdown. When healthy, it is clear to see a tight end that is a good enough blocker, but has Jimmy Graham-type potential as a receiver, but with better speed.

Round 3 Pick 71: Kayshon Boutte, WR, LSU

When the college football season began, LSU’s Kayshon Boutte was a near-lock as a 1st round pick. An excellent route runner with SEC elite-level speed, the 6-0 205 lbs receiver was destined for a massive season. Instead, an uneven season with new coach Brian Kelly leaves Boutte on the outside looking in at Day 1 of the NFL draft, and a potential steal for the Seahawks.

With pick 70 added to their stockpile, the Seahawks can use this pick to add a best-player-available type of pick, while still upgrading the trenches. With Boutte, the Seahawks have a unique weapon from a school that consistently produces star wideouts.

When I watch the tape, I see so many similarities to Deebo Samuel. The size, the running ability, the burst, and power as both a receiver and running back. In the right scheme, this is a true number 1 guy that just needs the right environment to flourish.

Round 3 Pick 83: Noah Sewell, Linebacker, Oregon

As my friend Dan Viens has stated on his podcast Seahawks Forever, Noah Sewell may be the quietest name in this entire draft class. The younger brother of Detroit Lions Penei Sewell, Noah is a big, physical middle linebacker from Oregon that may be a great fit to learn from Bobby Wagner. After a dominant sophomore season that saw Sewell record over 100 tackles and 4 sacks, many preseason mock drafts had Noah as a surefire 1st round pick. Fast forward to today, and you’re seeing more mocks about where Sewell is going in the 3rd round. While Oregon had a strong season, Sewell’s stats were way down and likely led to his drop.

At the end of the day, Sewell is an extremely physical downhill linebacker that is going to help shut down the run game up the middle. This would be a massive upgrade over what the Seahawks saw from their LB core last season. He’s not going to be great if left alone in space, but used properly, he can be a powerful weapon to spell Bobby Wagner in 2023.
