Seahawks add former Vikings quarterback Jaren Hall to the practice squad

The Seattle Seahawks needed a QB3 for the 2024 season and they might have just got one with the signing of Jaren Hall.

QB3 is a slightly weird concept in the NFL. The hope is that the quarterback never plays, but still has a great importance. The reason is that while a QB3 is normally signed to the practice squad, they can be on the sidelines during real games and enter the game if something happens to the first two quarterbacks. On Monday, the Seattle Seahawks reportedly added Jaren Hall as their QB3.

Hall was formerly with the Minnesota Vikings. He was a fifth-round draft pick in 2023 out of BYU and he started two games and appeared in three. He was among the Vikings' final roster cuts made this season and was not signed to Minnesota's practice squad but has now been with Seattle's.

With the Vikings in 2023, Hall was 1-1 in his starts but was not asked to do much. The most passes he threw in a game was 10 in a 33-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 17. In his first start against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 9, Hall completed five of six passes for 78 yards.

He is not a big quarterback at just 6' and 207 pounds, but he does have some ability to evade a rush. His ability to run is one reason he was chosen in the draft at all. At BYU, he started 24 games, completing 65.2 percent of his passes, but he also ran 181 times for 798 yards and nine touchdowns.

Should he have to enter a game for the Seahawks, he would likely be treated the same way he was with the Vikings. In other words, he might be tasked with handing off a bunch while the coaches hope Hall does not turn the ball over.

During training camp and the preseason, the Seahawks used PJ Walker as their QB3. He was fairly awful and the team decided not to bring Walker back to the practice squad. Now, Hall needs to learn the playbook quickly and be ready to stand on the sidelines all season long while backing up Geno Smith and Sam Howell. Let's just hope he never has to play.
