Seahawks emerge as potential suitor for Justin Fields, but does it make sense?
Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields could be looking for a new NFL home this offseason, and the Seattle Seahawks could potentially be an interesting landing spot.
In a recent article for Bleacher Report, NFL analyst Brent Sobleski laid out a case for why Seattle could be interested in adding Fields. Here's some of what he had to say:
"Geno Smith has provided a wonderful story of perseverance, with two winning campaigns, an NFL Comeback Player of the Year award and two Pro Bowl appearances. However, the Seahawks were barely over .500 during that stretch. As a result, the organization chose to move past Pete Carroll as its head coach after 14 seasons.
"With former Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald taking Carroll's position, the possibility of adding an athlete of Fields' caliber to give a Lamar Jackson-like presence in the offense may be quite tempting."
If the Seahawks aren't sold on Geno Smith being their guy moving forward, looking to swap him for Fields could make sense.
First of all, there's the age difference. Fields is nearly a decade younger than Smith, and thus probably has a lot more football ahead of him. If the Seahawks acquired him and it worked it, Seattle could have the quarterback position set for the foreseeable future.
There would also be a financial benefit, as the Seahawks could save $13.2 million by releasing Smith and acquiring Fields, per Sobleski. That savings could obviously be helpful when it comes to building out the rest of the roster.
Plus, Fields has flashed some serious potential during his first three years in Chicago. Sure, he also had his fair share of struggles, but the team as a whole had issues. A new home away from the expectations of the fans and team in the city that drafted him could help Fields take his game to the next level.
Seattle isn't the most likely landing spot for Fields, but it's a situation to keep an eye on over the offseason nonetheless.
