Seahawks fans might find recent Jerry Rice meltdown a bit bittersweet
By Lee Vowell
Jerry Rice was a short-lived wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks, but no one is going to remember his days in Seattle as the best of his career. Not by a long shot. Rice also played with the Oakland Raiders but his days as a Raider won't be how he is remembered either. As much as it is no fun to admit, Rice is an all-time great player for the San Francisco 49ers.
Recently, though, Rice had a personal day he probably would like to forget. Or, at least, ignore. The issue is that Rice is old enough and famous enough to know better.
Here is what happened. Rice was playing golf with some buddies, as one does, and was enjoying himself, one assumes. While he was doing so a couple of trolls involved with Kansas City, Missouri-based Starcade Media (what a horrible name) - they claim not to be trolls but let's be real as who else approaches a famous person on a gold course out of the blue - were filming, well...something.
Jerry Rice gets baited into a bad scene by a couple of trolls
The persons tried to ask Rice a question about the Kansas City Chiefs receiver group. One has to remember that the Chiefs have beaten Rice's first football love, the 49ers, twice in the last five seasons in the Super Bowl. Sure, Rice knows a good receiver from a bad one, but context is important. As Rice is full of 49ers blood, he might take issue with someone asking questions about a team that has recently beaten his favorite squad at such a high level.
The question asked by the trolls was something about whether the Chiefs have a good enough receiving group to win again (surely knowing that KC had beaten Rice's 49ers twice in recent Super Bowls). Rice doesn't reply and keeps walking and then time goes by. In the next frame, we see Rice a few feet ahead and calling the trolls a name.
Again, the weird part is that these two persons from Starcade Media are clearly at this celebrity golf tournament to accost the players. They also approached Marcus Allen who did answer a question but did not stop. Instead of a scheduled interview, which one can safely assume Starcade Media likely could not get, they chose to ambush people trying to play golf. The move was unfair to the players, including Rice.
Later, clearly after the first incident, we see the trolls again in front of Rice as he is trying to walk down the fairway. They knew what they were doing and they knew they were causing an issue. The issue is Rice should have known that too and just kept walking. Instead, he told one of the trolls, "I will (expletive) you up." Security comes by and makes sure the situation does not escalate.
Let this be a lesson, kids. If you are famous, take the high road when others are taking the low. If you are a person trying to have a valid podcast or website, don't be a jerk.
