Seahawks fans can gleefully snicker at the current misery of the 49ers

Maybe things will be different when the teams play, but 12s can look down on the 49ers currently.

The San Francisco 49ers are currently in a position to compete for a Super Bowl victory more than the Seattle Seahawks are. The 49ers have been to two Super Bowls in the last five seasons and lost both. Seattle hasn't been to the Super Bowl since the 2014 season. But what we see now certainly is not going to last forever.

While Seattle is tight against the cap already in 2025, so are the 49ers. San Francisco is in far worse shape in 2026. In two seasons, the Seahawks could get back to being the alphas in the NFC West. The 49ers could be on a precipitous decline.

The fun part for 12s right now is looking down at San Francisco and watching a couple of their players give the organization such misery. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is a free agent after this season and has already acted as if he has one step at the door. The rumors of him being traded might not stop until he potentially leaves in free agency next year.

Seahawks fans can laugh at the 49ers current situation

He has decided to "hold in" in 49ers camp, but that does not mean he is happy. Plus, who knows what he is saying to his teammates?

One player who decided to not show up to camp is left tackle Trent Williams. Williams is one of the best offensive tackles in the history of the league. If San Francisco doesn't have him, the overall play of the rest of their offensive line would possibly be poor. Bad enough, in fact, to bring San Francisco back to the NFC West field a bit.

The odd part is that Williams is not one of the players San Francisco will have to pay to keep him around after 2024 or 2025. The left tackle is signed through 2026. His issue appears to be that he has no guaranteed money left on his deal and he wants his contract reworked as running back Christian McCaffrey did this summer. Prior to the rework, McCaffrey also had no guaranteed money left.

San Francisco, as great as Williams is, might not try too hard to make the left tackle happy. He will be 36 years old this year. He will be 38 in 2026. At some point, he is going to start to slow down and San Francisco probably doesn't want to guarantee lots of money to an aging player.

In fact, that might not be able to. Next offseason, San Francisco is negative-$38,915,094 in cap room and that does not include any potential new deal for Aiyuk. In 2026, the 49ers have $43,643,403 in space, but that doesn't include paying quarterback Brock Purdy and wide receiver Deebo Samuel, both of whom are currently set for free agency after 2025.
