It only took the Seahawks a few games to not miss Shane Waldron
After three seasons as the Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator, Shane Waldron departed for the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator job this offseason. Waldron had success during his first two years running the Seahawks offense, especially in 2022 during Geno Smith's first year as the starting quarterback.
By 2023, however, the bottom dropped out and it was clear that it was time for a change. Waldron accepted the Bears offensive coordinator job and the Seahawks went on to hire Ryan Grubb, who has the Seahawks in 12th in points scored through four games.
More Seahawks news
Not only is Grubb doing nice things in his new position, but Waldron is the same old Waldron Seahawks fans grew frustrated with a season ago. The Bears offense finally had a nice game in Week 4 but before that, Caleb Williams and company were struggling to do much of anything offensively.
Getting back to Grubb though, the Seahawks playmakers are feeling the changes in the best possible way. Warren Sharp outlined how much better Jaxon Smith-Njigba is doing under his new offensive coordinator and how Bears receiver D.J. Moore is doing under Waldron.
Seahawks playmakers are better off with Ryan Grubb
In these graphics, there's a stat from a Seahawks' 2023 game against the 49ers where Smith-Njigba was targeted just three times and caught two passes for 41 yards. That was life with Waldron for JSN and life after Waldron consisted of Smith-Njigba's stat line against the Patriots where he was targeted 14 times and caught 12 passes for 117 yards.
Meanwhile, D.J. Moore was targeted 13 times and had nine catches for 159 yards and a touchdown in a game against the Falcons last year. In a game against the Rams this year, with Waldron as his coordinator, Moore had just six passes sent his way with him catching three of those for 22 yards and a touchdown.
The difference between having Waldron and Grubb as the offensive coordinator has been massive for Jaxon Smith-Njigba and now D.J. Moore and the other Bears playmakers are seeing the impact of having Waldron run the offense.
