Seahawks coach Pete Carroll just called himself "old" but Pete is ageless
By Lee Vowell
Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll is one of the oldest head coaches in NFL history. He admits as much (not that one can dispute it), but is he needing to be replaced? Or is Carroll simply an ageless wonder who can coach for as long as he wants?
Carroll calling himself "old" came up on Jackie Slater's OnPoint Live podcast when Carroll was talking about Sean McVay (still the NFL's youngest head coach at 37 even though it sometimes feels as if McVay has coached the Rams for 37 years as well) and talking about how the Rams went just 5-12 last season.
Per Carroll, "(McVay's) one of the best coaches that I’ve ever worked against. I love competing against him. I love that he’s a young guy, I’m an old guy, and we get to go head-to-head all the time."
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll says he is "old" but doesn't seem it
But one has to wonder which coach will leave his team first? Young guy McVay or old guy Carroll. 2023 aside for McVay, and 2022 aside for Carroll, both coaches have proven over several years that they can lead teams to sustained success. But McVay is the one where every offseason there seems to be speculation that he won't be around the following year.
Other Seahawks news
Maybe McVay just wants to move into the front office or maybe he wants to join a broadcast booth somewhere. Imagining that McVay will still be the Rams coach in five years is difficult to do. He might be, but there is every chance, by his own choice, that he isn't working for the Rams in 2028.
But Pete Carroll might still be. Sure, he'd be by far the oldest coach to ever be the head coach of a team in the NFL, but he is more successful than almost any coach ever anyway. He definitely is the best Seahawks coach in franchise history. One shouldn't forget that Carroll is also Vice President of Football Operations so he has control over when he leaves Seattle.
Plus, anyone who watches Carroll pre-game knows he is as spry as most 30 year old. He plays catch with the players, hustles around, and he certainly doesn't look like what you'd think a nearly 72 year old person would look like. Or maybe that's just an ageist view and no matter how old Carroll is he can still beat nearly any other coach of any age.
