For Pete's Sake: Critical observations from Seahawks preseason Week 2 win
Seahawks saw several players push to start in great efforts
As Kate Scott said to Boye Mafe after the game, it didn't feel like a preseason game. No ma'am, it did not. Mafe only had two tackles and one QB hit, but he broke up two passes and seemed to be an Oscar-winning film. You know, Everything Everywhere All at Once. His stats in no way reflect his true impact on this game. It seemed that he was in on virtually every play, both on passes and runs. Mafe is definitely going to wreck the league. Not to say I told you so, but I told you so back in mid-June.
Other standouts on the night: SaRodorick Thompson ran hard, piling up 50 yards on 11 carries. He had that 20-yard run called back on holding, and lost at least 20 more yards as he barely stepped out on his 29-yard burst. He's going to attract a lot of attention around the league with this performance. Tre Brown took a huge step forward in the competition at left corner. In addition to his stellar goal-line interception and 20-yard return, he had five tackles, including one for a loss. Compare that to Jackson's repeated miscues in coverage, and it's now Brown's job to lose. Like I said earlier, looks like K.J. was right when he said the Hawks should trade Mike Jack.
I feel like it's just superfluous to mention Jake Bobo at this point. If he doesn't make this squad, the Seahawks might as well move to the Pac-12. That league could use the help. Other standouts included Tyreke Smith, who missed all of last season with a hip injury. He tied Patrick O'Connell for the team lead with seven tackles, two for losses, and that final crazy 20-yard sack. Between his performance and Mafe's, I stand by my statement about trading Darrell Taylor. Finally, Levi Bell seemed to be in on every other play, again.
Geno looked good, Drew looked good, and JSN looked like pure silk. The Hawks won the time of possession and rolled up 141 yards on the ground and gave up less than 100. They committed zero turnovers, hit the big plays on offense, and the defense made even bigger plays when they needed to. I don't know about you, 12s, but the 2023 Seahawks are looking very good to me.
