Seahawks release an edge rusher and the Dolphins quickly sweep him up
By Lee Vowell
The Seattle Seahawks needed more help than they got in Week 4 from the defense. Playing a bunch of backups due to having so many injured starters, Seattle got run through and passed over by the Detroit Lions. One of those backups was Tyus Bowser who had previously been signed to Seattle's practice squad. He had also played with Mike Macdonald with the Baltimore Ravens.
Bowser has had a bit of a weird career. He had 40 total quarterback pressures in 2021 and then he was injured for much of 2022 and completely missed 2023 with a knee injury. Whatever he might have shown teams to prove he could play this year didn't work until Seattle took a chance on him.
In Week 4 against the Detroit Lions, Bowser was in on 25 snaps, mostly on run defense, and he didn't offer much production. He had one quarterback pressure and made one tackle. That certainly was not enough to help the team, and obviously the Seahawks had no faith in him doing so in the future. On Thursday, Seattle released Bowser from the practice squad.
Seahawks waive Tyus Bowser and the Miami Dolphins scoop him up
The Miami Dolphins were clearly waiting for Bowser to be released because they nearly immediately claimed him off waivers. In fact, so fast that it was weird. To be fair, Miami does need any help they can get with their pass rush as they learned that once again they will be without Jaelan Phillips due to an injury.
The problem is that Bowser appears to be a shell of his 2021 self after suffering Achilles and knee injuries. He is also a terrible tackler, having missed at least 21 percent of his tackle attempts in 2021 and 2022. As tackling has been an issue for the Seahawks this year, the team probably decided to cut ties with Bowser because he was likely to be no help there.
There could be another good sign about Seattle cutting the veteran. That might mean that Uchenna Nwosu or Boye Mafe - or both - are ready to return in Week 5 and Bowser was just an extra to have around.
