Seahawks roster cuts tracker: Live updates and analysis - updated 8/27

Some Seattle players simply couldn't cut it.

Roster-cut decisions might be a bit tougher for the Seattle Seahawks this year. The reason is that for the first time since 2010, Pete Carroll is not in charge of the final roster. General manager John Schneider is. Plus, Mike Macdonald is the new head coach and he has never been a head coach before.

That doesn't mean Seattle's decisions will be worse. They simply will be made to mold the players to new offensive and defensive schemes. Schneider will need to make sure he keeps inside linebackers who cover well to fit Macdonald's system, for instance.

Prior to 2023, roster cuts were made in multiple parts. Last year, the NFL changed to a one-time cut from 90 players to 53. This year, the cut-down day is Tuesday, August 27. That does not mean the team isn't making moves already for one reason or another.

Seattle Seahawks roster cut tracker:

Seahawks waive Matt Gotel and Rodney Matthews

Gotel was purely a nose tackle and he had great size, but he could never really stay healthy. Plus, Mike Macdonald highly values position flexibility and Gotel was not capable of that. Williams was never expected to make the roster but was worth a look (and release).

Seahawks waive Devin Richardson and Willie Roberts

Seattle needed to make room to add two tight ends as the team's tight end room was suffering a number of injuries. Unfortunately for Richardson and Roberts, they drew the short straws and had to be let go. To be fair, Roberts never has a chance to be on the team as Seattle has too many CBs already.

Seahawks waive rookie D.J. James

According to ESPN's Brady Henderson, James was one of the first players informed he would be waived. He was terrible in the preseason. He might return to the practice squad.

Of course, any of the players cut can be brought back to the practice squad, if the team deems them worthy. More likely, however, if the player is cut before August 27, the team has given up on them for good.

Seahawks waive running back George Holani

According to the NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Seattle has waived Holani. The running back seemed to be having a great preseason as well. The move is somewhat surprising.

Seahawks waive edge rusher Jamie Sheriff

According to ESPN's Henderson, Sheriff is being waived. He led the Seahawks in sacks in the preseason with three. He should be a candidate to make the practice squad unless another team picks him up.

Seahawks waive linebackers Jon Rhattigan and Easton Gibbs as well as safety Ty Okada

These moves were reported by ESPN's Henderson. Rhattigan was a bit of a surprise except he was going to cost the team nearly $3 million to be a backup linebacker and special teamer. Okada should make the practice squad. Gibbs had little chance to make the team.

Seahawks release wide receiver Easop Winston

How little respect did Winston get when his release was announced by Tom Pelissero? His name was misspelled as "Eason" Winston. He deserved better.

Seahawks release defensive tackle Mario Kendricks

Kendricks had little chance to make the team. He probably won't be added to the practice squad either.

Seahawks waive tight end Michael Ezeike and linebacker Patrick O'Connell

Neither Ezeike nor O'Connell were likely to make the roster. Both could make the practice squad, though. O'Connell does have some athleticism.

Seahawks waive defensive lineman DeVere Levelston

Levelston was solid in the preseason in backups versus backups. He should catch on with the practice squad.

Seahawks release edge rusher Nelson Ceaser

Ceaser was solid against the run. The hope may be that he makes the practice squad. He probably has some potential, but he needs some seasoning.

According to Jordan Schultz, Seahawks are releasing Dee Eskridge

Dee Eskridge has been an oft-injured, non-performer for Seattle since he was drafted. He made a nice punt return in preseason Week 3 but that appears to be the last thing he will do for Seattle. At least, if you believe Jordan Schultz.

Seahawks waive tight end Tyler Mabry (again)

Poor Mabry. He has been waived a number of times by Seattle and keeps finding his way back. He likely will make the practice squad.

Seahawks waive quarterback PJ Walker

Walker will not return to the Seahawks. At least, not on the active roster. Hopefully, not on the practice squad either as he has been terrible in the preseason.
