Seahawks turn a long Giants drive into their own 102-yard touchdown
The Seahawks gave up 79 yards on the Giants opening drive, then stuck it to them with a spectacular goal-line stand. Rayshawn Jenkins took a fumble in the end zone into the first points of the day for Seattle.
The Hawks got off to a slow start on offense. DK Metcalf, who was targeted on the first 238 passes from Geno Smith, dropped two balls to put the Hawks in third and long and then a punt. Okay, 238 is an exaggeration, but not by much. Coby Bryant barely missed downing the punt at the Giants one-yard line. That turned out to be a bit of foreshadowing.
Seattle started strong, sacking Daniel Jones on the first play for New York. Derick Hall pushed a Giants lineman into Jones, who tripped. Hall then finished the play off, forcing a fumble. The Giants recovered athe hier own five-yard line. Obviously, the Hawks were set for a great defensive performance. Except, not really.
The Seattle Seahawks score on a spectacular defensive stand
Did I say defensive stand? Considering that the hawks had no answers for the Giants offensive scheme after that initial sack, I'll admit that seems to an odd statement. Daniel Jones repeatedly found open receivers. Whether it was on screens to wideouts or running backs, or hitting his tight end over the middle, Jones was on target. He also picked up yards with his feet on two key plays.
In what seemed to be the entire first quarter, the Giants were on the Seahawks one-yard line with two downs to pick up the first score of the game. Jerome Baker came up with a huge play, slicking through the line to stop Eric Gray for no gain. New York did the right thing on fourth down and inches. On the road, you have to go for the touchdown when you're that close.
That turned out to be the wrong move, though. Gray was stopped at the goal line by Baker and Julian Love. Bad enough for the Giants, but in his effort to reach across the goal line, Gray fumbled the ball. Rayshawn Jenkins knows a gift when he sees it. 102 yards later, the Hawks had the first points of the day.
As the defense and offense continue to struggle, Seattle may need more spectacular plays to put their fourth W in the win column.
