Steelers 'convinced' trading for DK Metcalf might still be an option
By Lee Vowell
There are likely audible groans from Seattle Seahawks fans. "Not another DK Metcalf trade article," right? No 12 wants Metcalf to leave Seattle, one assumes. Well, maybe some do, but the fact is that the team would be worse off should the receiver be moved.
One team that doesn't seem to want to leave Metcalf alone is the Pittsburgh Steelers. There have been rumors seemingly ever since Pittsburgh picked up former Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson that Metcalf could wind up in Pittsburgh. It is a logical thought, sure, but not one appears to be based in reality.
Or maybe it is. According to Chris Halicke of the ironically named DK Pittsburgh Sports, the Steelers are "convinced" they have a good shot of landing either Metcalf, Brandon Aiyuk, or Tyreek Hill. Halicke mentions a "team source" spoke of how confident the Steelers are in adding one of the receivers. (Not to doubt Halicke, but it does seem odd a "team source" would tell his website that and not, say, ESPN's Adam Schefter, but I digress.)

The issue is acquiring any of the receivers is what Pittsburgh would have to give up. The Steelers have one first-round pick in 2025 and one first-rounder in 2026 and the Seahawks would most likely want one of those choices along with a player or another relatively high draft pick. Otherwise, move Metcalf at all?
The receiver is signed through 2025 and he is going to get paid a high price as a free agent in 2026. Hopefully, Seattle can extend him before he hits free agency in much the same way the team extended Julian Love in training camp before Love hits free agency next year. A contract that averages $30 million a season is not out of the question. Metcalf is still only 26 years old.
Seattle might have cap issues next offseason, but Metcalf is not a concern there as he is already signed. In 2026, a lot of cap room opens up for the Seahawks so having Metcalf sign his third contract with the team is definitely financially achievable.
There is little doubt that Metcalf is WR1 for Seattle currently as he led the team in receiving yards, receiving touchdowns, and average yards per catch in 2023. He could be even better under new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. Moving on from Metcalf makes little sense right now.
