A wild week in the world of NFL coaching had it's craziest moment yet on Wednesday, when the Seahawks came out of nowhere to announce that Pete Carroll, who's been running the show up in Seattle for the last 14 years, would be 'evolving' from head coach to advisor.

Even though there were some whispers towards the end of this season that it may be Carroll's last, the 72-year old coach told the media this week that he still had enough energy and drive to continue on. The team clearly had other plans, however, and Wednesday's bombshell report was the talk of Twitter, for as long as anything can remain the talk of Twitter:
I think Seattle should conduct a broad search bc there are so many top tier candidates this cycle, buuuuuuuuuuuut Dan Quinn + Devon Witherspoon would be electric

Pete Carroll wasn't supposed to be good in the NFL, wasn't supposed to build an elite defense in this era, wasn't supposed to win with his offensive philosophy, wasn't supposed to win without Russell Wilson...I could go on. Absolute stud who made many of us look like idiots.

One thing that is sad (for me) about Pete Carroll stepping down is that there's now one less NFL head coach who will quote DVOA numbers in press conferences.

In @PeteCarroll's 14 years as HC, the Seahawks ...

• Made the playoffs 10 times.
• Won the NFC West 5 times.
• Won two NFC championships.
• Won Super Bowl XLVIII.
• Went 147-98-1.
He's one of 3 coaches to win both a Super Bowl and a Div. I-A national title.
Wow.

Farewell to an absolute legend, and the most accomplished coach in Seattle sports history.
No matter what happens next, I will be forever grateful for the most thrilling 14 years I’ve ever had as a fan.

This day in Seahawks history is shocking. Pete Carroll will still be in the building but, man. My heart dropped when I just heard the news. Will be forever thankful for what he’s done for this franchise. He turned this organization around. Much respect and Love.

For perspective on how long Pete Carroll was in Seattle, the other Class of 2010 head coaching hires were Chan Gailey in Buffalo, Leslie Frazier in Minnesota, and Mike Shanahan in Washington, who had Sean McVay as his assistant tight ends coach.

At 72, Pete Carroll still has his entire career ahead of him if he wants to get into politics.

I get that he’s 72, but he seems like a very different 72 than typical 72.
