The preseason is done, 12s! Finally, we are about to embark on a run of real games for the Seattle Seahawks. The regular season gets underway on September 8 at Lumen Field against the Denver Broncos.

The team went 2-1 in the most meaningless preseason games. Of course, only the win-loss record is truly without meaning. Head coach Mike Macdonald and general manager John Schneider learned a lot about the players they have and that is clearly going to help form the thinking of who Seattle keeps on the active roster.

Some Seahawks hoping to keep clinging to a roster spot failed in the preseason. Others relieved some fears that their offseason acquisition might be a waste. Ultimately, some players will be losing jobs for how they performed in the preseason.

Winners and losers from the Seattle Seahawks 2024 preseason

Winner - Quarterback Sam Howell

The hope was that Howell would be more of a gamer than he was an efficient practice quarterback because he was fairly bad in training camp. Then what was hoped for came true. Howell finished the preseason fourth in the NFL in passer rating at 97.8 and completed 66 percent of his passes with no interceptions.

His performance against backups was so impressive that some still think there should be a quarterback controversy in Seattle. Of course, if anyone saw what Geno Smith did in his one series against the starters for the Cleveland Browns then any potential controversy was put to rest. Still, Howell looked solid enough to make 12s feel OK about the team's chances should he need to be QB1 for a bit.

One does have to wonder how Howell will do against actual starters, however. He was still sacked six times and that was a real problem for him last season when he was with the Washington Commanders. Does the quarterback have issues not getting the ball away soon enough?

One thing is for certain, though, Howell performed well enough in the preseason to give himself a chance to start in 2025 should something happen to Smith.
