The Seattle Seahawks and the Los Angeles Rams will close out championship Sunday in Seattle this weekend, and their paths to the NFC Championship couldn’t be more different. The Rams, finishing the regular season 12-5, had to play two road playoff games, and barely escaped each round, winning both games by three points. The 14-3 Seahawks, on the other hand, had a first-round bye and won by 35 points in the Divisional Round.

None of that may matter on Sunday, because these two teams are seemingly destined to play close, nail-biting games with each other. The two NFC West teams have already met twice this season, splitting their regular-season matchups.

Those two battles were scary close. Combining both games, Los Angeles scored 58 total points, and Seattle had 57. The Rams had 830 total yards in the two meetings, and the Seahawks had 829.

Seahawks and Rams have a nearly even history ahead of NFC Championship

The home team won both meetings, with Los Angeles emerging victorious 21-19 in Week 11, and Seattle getting the overtime victory 38-37 in Week 16. Now, it’s time for a rubber match, with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line.

This season’s games were just the latest editions of a competitive rivalry. A closer look at the history of the matchup shows that Seattle and Los Angeles may have been destined to meet on Sunday. In NFL history, these two franchises have faced off 57 times; the record is 29-28 in the Seahawks’ favor. In those games, Seattle has scored 1,223 points to the Rams’ 1,222.

Two of those meetings came in the playoffs. During the 2020 season, Los Angeles went on the road to defeat Seattle 30-20 in a Wild Card game. Back in the 2004 season, the St. Louis Rams, at the time, won another road Wild Card game against the Seahawks 27-20.

On Sunday, Seattle will be hoping to pick up its first postseason win against the Rams. While history says this game should be close, the Seahawks would love to dominate another divisional opponent en route to a Super Bowl appearance. If the team is clicking in all three phases, like it has most of the season, that could happen.
