Rodney Thomas couldn’t wait to embrace the Seahawks’ Dark Side

What he said.

The Seattle Seahawks may already have their replacement for safety Coby Bryant on the roster. Bryant signed with the Chicago Bears in free agency, and Ty Okada will likely take his spot. Free agent signee Rodney Thomas II will get a chance, too, of course, and what is certain is that he is happy to be part of Seattle's defense.

Thomas most recently played for the Indianapolis Colts, but he was relegated to a backup role after being a full-time starter in his first two seasons (2022 and 2023). The odd part was that Thomas didn't play horribly to lose his job. Indy just went a different direction.

That won't happen with the Seahawks, though. Head coach Mike Macdonald will start whoever he thinks is the best fit and give his defense a chance to be elite, of course, but he will try to get everyone in the game who could change the outcome. That is part of his brilliance.

Rodney Thomas II delighted to be a new part of the Seattle Seahawks

All players know that if their teammates make plays in practice, they will have an opportunity to do the same in real games. That has helped build more of a team atmosphere, and players playing for each other is important to any winning culture.

That is what helped Rodney Thomas II decide to join the Seahawks as well. He wanted to be part of a grander plan.

"The brotherhood," Thomas told the Seahawks official site. "It just speaks volumes on the tape. Just something I want to be a part of, something that I'm used to, just guys pulling for one another, just laying it on the line for the guy beside you. It's a part of the program I want to be part of. You could just see every time someone makes a play, if you just turn it on randomly, you'll see everybody celebrating, you can't tell who made the play because everybody's that excited for the guy beside them."

Thomas will certainly need to prove his worth in 2026. Coby Bryant wasn't the only defensive free agent to leave. The collection of talent that remains and has been added to in free agency might need to become greater than its pieces. Bryant was excellent at times, but so was cornerback Riq Woolen and edge rusher Boye Mafe, who also signed elsewhere.

As a full-time starter, Thomas had a great quarterback rating allowed of 62.9 as a rookie. In his second season, his number rose to 97.9, but while he gave up two touchdown passes, he also had two interceptions. This came a year after he had four interceptions in his first season.

Rodney Thomas II might not be a starter for the Seattle Seahawks in 2026, but he could be a key backup and get on the field a bunch in three safety sets. He might turn out ot be the latest hidden gem that general manager John Schneider found.
