Russell Wilson’s Giants quarterback experiment is unraveling just as fans feared

Maybe reality is different because otherwise empathy is needed.

The Seattle Seahawks will have a lot of former quarterbacks playing in the NFL in 2025. This is something new to 12s because for a decade, only Russell Wilson was the starter, and then for the three seasons after he left, Geno Smith was the only starter. There was no QB drama.

But now, Wilson will be the starter for the New York Giants in Week 1, Smith will do the same for the Las Vegas Raiders, and 2024 backup Sam Howell might be taking a seat on the Minnesota Vikings.

Howell could be released, too, as he wasn't good in preseason Week 2. Smith is going to stay as the Vegas starter because head coach Pete Carroll is a loyal person, and the Raiders don't have anyone else close to Smith's ability.

Seattle Seahawks legend Russell Wilson might be losing friends with the Giants

Russell Wilson, though? He is probably just a placeholder for rookie Jaxson Dart. Dart has impressed in training camp and the preseason, so if the Giants start badly, Wilson could be replaced by Week 5. Would his fellow quarterbacks on the New York roster be too upset?

Maybe not. One issue for Wilson is that his answers to reporters' questions, and his appearances on social media and in commercials, come across as disingenuous and rehearsed. While he says otherwise, his body language implies he cares more about himself than the team.

Wilson is part of a crowded quarterback room with the Giants. Tommy DeVito is likely on his way out of New York and is QB4. Dart is at worst QB3, but could rise quickly. Veteran turnover machine Jameis Winston is QB2.

DeVito is a fan-favorite with the Giants, and he might have played his final game for the team in preseason Week 3. Fans, the team, and players know he is probably going to be released, so his fellow quarterbacks paid homage to him before the Giants' game against the New England Patriots.

All the quarterbacks and the team, except for Russell Wilson, that is.

Perhaps, there is no lack of love for Wilson, and he simply wasn't around to take photos with DeVito, Dart, and Winston. His absence from the photos is certainly noticeable, though.

Eventually, as has happened with all four of his stops in the NFL, Russell Wilson will likely wear out his proverbial welcome with the New York Giants, and teammates will tune him out. This certainly happened with the Seattle Seahawks. Wilson isn't a bad person, but he lacks the self-awareness it takes to not come across as ultimately fake.
