Russell Wilson is becoming like an aged baseball pitcher as he keeps trying to find teams that will pay him to play, even though he is seemingly washed up. But the greatest quarterback in Seattle Seahawks history did find a new place for 2025, and one place he might have wanted to be forever.
New York has likely been one of Wilson's dream destinations for a long time. Not only does the city have all the types of media that can shine a bright spotlight on Wilson, and he appears to need the limelight, but NYC might also be a boon to Ciara, Wilson's wife, and her career.
Ciara is a talented performer who will probably stay pop-relevant for years. Russell Wilson, potentially once on a Pro Football Hall of Fame trajectory, could be done after this coming season.
Former Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson could find 2025 is his last in the NFL
The quarterback, who will always be important in Seahawks lore because of the success he had with the team, has odd traits now. His raw numbers imply he is efficient, and that should help his team win. Since his one truly bad year in 2022, he has combined to throw for 42 touchdowns and only 13 interceptions, and his quarterback rating is 97. Solid.
But his teams, like many of the second halves of seasons in Wilson's time in the NFL, falter in the end. He quarterbacked the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, and Pittsburgh lost its final five games and never scored more than 17 points in any one of them.
Surprisingly, Wilson was named to the Pro Bowl (after a couple of other quarterbacks decided not to go). He also got votes for Comeback Player of the Year, even though the only thing he was coming back from was being given the boot by the Denver Broncos after the 2023 season.
Now, Wilson is playing for the dreadful New York Giants. The quarterback should not feel secure in his job, though, as the Giants also added veteran Jameis Winston and drafted Jaxson Dart in the first round of the 2025 draft.
By most media accounts, the quarterback play for the Giants during organized team activities has been terrible, including Wilson's.
Worst for Wilson is that fans have been clamoring for the team to start the popular Winston (how this remains so is a mystery, but it is the case) over the former Seahawks quarterback. Winston is more consistent in creating splashy plays, but he also will throw a lot more picks than Wilson.
Ultimately, though, the Giants are just a bad team in a good NFC East, and there is little way for Wilson to come out of the situation looking good. Teams were already iffy about signing him (New York is his fourth team in five seasons), and he is running out of destinations to go. Wilson might also face the wrath of the New York media should things go as expected: Horribly.
He isn't a bad person, though. He is just a bit too robotic in his answers, and he comes across a bit fake. He does give freely to charities, though, and does a lot of good off-field things. He might find himself devoted fully to those causes after the 2025 season.
