Seattle Seahawks fans already know that quarterback Sam Darnold will miss Week 2 against the Arizona Cardinals after Darnold injured a glute muscle in Week 1. Drew Lock will play the part of QB1 for at least one game, and maybe two or more. The opportunity gives Lock a chance to change his fortunes in 2027.
Lock was quite good in the second half of Week 1, leading Seattle to a 13-10 victory against the New England Patriots after Seattle trailed 10-0 in the third quarter. The QB didn't turn the ball over and played with surprising efficiency.
If he can do that in Week 2, Lock will look that much better to prospective teams in 2027 free agency. The quarterback's current contract ends after this season.
Seattle Seahawks' Drew Lock might have two chances to make a lot of money in 2027
But according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Darnold might not return until Week 4 at the earliest. To be clear, Rapoport could simply be speculating, and Darnold could be back for Week 3 when Seattle plays the Washington Commanders. The Seahawks aren't going to push Darnold to return until he is fully healthy, though.
Too much football is left in the season for QB1 to risk aggravating his injury and causing him to miss more than just a couple of games. Drew Lock should be just fine in the next two games if needed.
Lock certainly hasn't given up on being a starter somewhere in the NFL, and he said as much during Seattle's press conference on Thursday. The quarterback didn't sound like the lucky guy who fell into starting the Seahawks. Instead, he was jovial and poised, and honest about his future.
The quarterback said, "I feel like that edge (to be a starting quarterback) is always there. It shouldn’t leave you. And the day it leaves me is the day I’d start looking at myself in the mirror like, ‘What are we doing?’ You always want to play; you always want to be the guy. You love the pressure of that."
The next two games will be telling. Teams thinking of signing Lock and giving him a chance to earn the starting job are going to want to see the quarterback stack successful games. Coming in after the first drive of the game in one game and then being poor in the next isn't enough, unless the intent is to make Lock a long-term backup for the Seattle Seahawks.
If Drew Lock succeeds in Week 2 by not having turnovers and being efficient with his passing, and then follows that by doing the same thing in Week 3, he would be selling his services in the best way to teams in 2027. He deserves a real chance to start somewhere, but that isn't going to happen in Seattle.
