Seattle Seahawks fans watched in horror as starting quarterback Sam Darnold limped off the field after the first drive of Week 1 against the New England Patriots. What was initially reported as a hip injury is something different. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the quarterback is dealing with a glute issue.
Glutes are located in the buttock region, and the muscle group is large enough that doing any kind of movement can be quite painful. The positive part is that the injury is very unlikely to keep Darnold out for very long.
Rapoport also reported that Seattle's QB1 will likely miss Week 2 against the Arizona Cardinals, and the team and player will reassess where he stands. The hope is that the Cardinals continue their long-term trek of being terrible, and that a Drew Lock-led offense can not struggle with Arizona's defense.
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold's injury has been updated to a glute issue
Lock was quite efficient and solid against the Patriots after entering the game, especially in the second half when the Seahawks scored 13 points to come back from 10 points down. Expecting perfection from Lock in Week 2 is expecting too much, but not turning the ball over and getting it into the hands of wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba should be enough to get by the Cardinals.
In Week 3, Seattle has to travel to play the Washington Commanders, a team no one can be exactly sure what to expect from. Two seasons ago, they appeared on the verge of being an NFC power. Last year, somewhat due to injuries, especially to quarterback Jayden Daniels, the Commanders were terrible.
Can Drew Lock help the Seahawks win a third straight game, assuming Seattle beats Arizona? Possibly, but that might not be needed.
Ultimately, how long Darnold is out could relate directly to how well he manages pain. His glute injury won't go away quickly, but it also shouldn't get worse. If he can run effectively, at least to avoid a pass rush and pick up first downs at times, then he will probably be back sooner than Week 3. To be clear, that is only an assumption. Things could definitely change.
The hope is that the Seattle Seahawks' recent bad luck with injuries doesn't continue. The team has already lost wide receiver Jake Bobo, fullback Robbie Ouzts, and safety Bud Clark for the season with injuries. When Sam Darnold does return, he needs to be close to 100 percent healthy.
