Seattle Seahawks jersey numbers are quite a bit different than decades ago as far as the position groups normally tied to certain sets. For instance, usually when a player wore something less than 20, they were most likely to be a quarterback, punter, or kicker. If the numbers were in the 80s, they were almost always wide receivers.
Sure, no quarterback is going to wear number 83, for instance. Even 26 would look weird, but a receiver wearing something less than 20? That is OK now. Or it was.
While with the Seahawks, DK Metcalf wore number 14. He turned out to be one of the more productive receivers in team history before he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason. With the Steelers, Metcalf will wear number 4.
Sam Darnold will wear number 14 for the Seattle Seahawks
This meant that number 14 was open for Seattle, which worked out well for recently signed quarterback Sam Darnold, as he has worn the number during his career. Darnold will wear 14 with the Seahawks, too. Athletes, like most people, can be somewhat superstitious, so jersey numbers matter. This is especially true for the NFL, as well, as the league loves to make money off jersey sales.
14 is generally considered a class number for quarterbacks, just as 12 used to be. In Seattle history, though, only five players, including Darnold, have worn 14. Metcalf is by far the most productive.
The other players were punter Rick Tuten (who did make the Pro Bowl in 1994 while being named Second-Team All-Pro), wide receiver Charly Martin (who played in four games for Seattle in 2012), and wide receiver Jason Willis (who played in one game for Seattle is 2004 and recorded a tackle).
Number 10 might be the most heavily negotiated number for Seattle in 2025. Edge rusher Uchenna Nwosu most recently has worn that number, but two new free-agent signees also recently wore number 10 with the teams they played for prior to joining Seattle.
Cooper Kupp wore 10 for the Los Angeles Rams but has won number 18 in his career, too. Marquez Valdes-Scantling wore number 10 with the New Orleans Saints. If someone wants Nwosu's number, they might need to pay him for it.
