Seahawks' important victory over the Falcons marred by DK Metcalf injury
The Seattle Seahawks came into Atlanta with several key players out. They may be down one more as DK Metcalf was carted off the field in the second half.
Seattle hasn't exactly had the best of luck when it comes to injuries this season. It started last season with the injury to Abe Lucas, as all 12s know. That was just the start, as the Hawks lost multiple defenders in Weeks 5 and 6. It didn't appear to be much better today in Atlanta, as both Riq Woolen and Tre Brown missed the game.
Happily, many of the backups that stepped in for the Hawks played well today. Seattle's fourth-string right tackle Michael Jerrell played far better than anyone could have expected. Well, anyone other than head coach Mike Macdonald, who trusted the rookie to hold his own, instead of activating long-time vet Jason Peters from the practice squad. I think Coach Mike just didn't want anyone a decade older than him on the field. Well, nearly.
Seattle Seahawks may face another serious injury with DK Metcalf
Metcalf went down in the second half with a knee injury. It didn't seem to be that serious at first, as he walked off the field under his own power. I love that phrase - under his own power. Just once, I'd like to see the trainers slap an exoskeleton on a player, like a loader out of Aliens, instead of helping them off the field.
Metcalf may have walked off the playing field, but it was clearly a serious injury. The Hawks training staff spent some time working with him in the protocol tent and on the sideline, but you could see Metcalf shaking his head no at one point, Not much later, he was carted off the field. That, dear 12s, is never a good sign.
Unlike most teams, the Seahawks are better equipped to handle his loss if it comes to that. Obviously, DK Metcalf is a starting wide receiver on any team. Happily, Seattle has the ever-reliable Tyler Lockett and the budding star Jaxon Smith-Njigba already torching opposing defenses. Despite his very uncharacteristic drop today, Jake Bobo remains an excellent target. Noah Fant has seen more targets in the past two weeks as well.
Losing DK Metcalf for any amount of time is less than ideal, of course. But it's the one position where the Seahawks have the depth to absorb the loss, at least for a while.
