The Seattle Seahawks will release their full inactives list about an hour and a half before kickoff in Week 3 against the Washington Commanders, and this article has been updated to show the full list of those players not involved. But 12s already had a decent idea of who wasn't going to be playing, and that included the team's starting safeties.
Julian Love has had a calf issue and didn't practice the week before the game. He was ruled out on Friday. So was fellow starting safety Ty Okada, who has yet to play this season after suffering a hamstring injury just before Week 1.
In their place will be Rodney Thomas II and AJ Finley. Thomas has started both of the first two games and has been solid. Finley has never started a game in his NFL career, so one should safely assume that head coach Mike Macdonald isn't going to expose him to many uncomfortable situations.
Seattle Seahawks facing a defensive back issue based on inactives for Week 3 versus the Commanders
That might mean that Nick Emmanwori has to play a more traditional safety role. That would limit how creative Macdonald can be, but might not limit the efficiency of the defense overall. The Seahawks will be facing a Commanders team playing backup quarterback Marcus Mariota, after all.
Even without Love and Finley, Seattle should get the victory. This is especially true because the Seahawks' own starting quarterback, Sam Darnold, will return after missing most of the first game and all of the second with a glute issue.
Because Darnold will return and Drew Lock will go back to being QB2, third-string quarterback Jalen Milroe was likely to be listed as inactive. Milroe can still play, though, if Darnold and Lock are both injured. No one wants to see that happen, though, so maybe Milroe won't get to be active.
Nose guard Brandon Pili was limited in practice too due to going through concussion protocol and was likely to be trending toward being inactive as well. He is a solid run-stopper but a backup, and the Seattle Seahawks should be able to get by without him fairly smoothly.
Below is the inactives list for the Seahawks in Week 3:
- Safety Julian Love (calf)
- Safety Ty Okada (hamstring)
- Quarterback Jalen Milroe (healthy)
- Cornerback Avery Smith (healthy)
- Edge rusher Connor O'Toole (healthy)
- Wide receiver Montorie Foster Jr. (healthy)
- Nose guard Brandon Pili (concussion)
