Seahawks might be forced to take Justin Britt up on his laughable offer
By Lee Vowell
Justin Britt was joking. Anyone watching the video of the offer he made to the Seattle Seahawks this week could understand that. The problem is that Seattle might have to think about the possibilities Britt brought up. Not in 2024, but in 2025.
Britt was Seattle's starting center from 2016 through 2019, and at times, he wasn't bad. That might sound like a bit of a slight, but it isn't. Besides left tackle Charles Cross and maybe left guard Laken Tomlinson, how many 2024 Seattle offensive linemen can one say weren't mostly bad? This includes now-retired center Connor Williams.
Williams was signed before the season to help be the anchor of what Seahawks general manager John Schneider hoped would be a better O-line this year. If anything, the line is worse. This is partly due to the team refusing to try anyone else at right guard except for Anthony Bradford. Bradford leads all NFL guards in panelaties and sacks allowed.
Justin Britt's offer to the Seattle Seahawks has frustrating overtones
Williams was good last year with the Miami Dolphins, but this season he has been mediocre. He struggled with snapping the ball to quarterback Geno Smith at times, and that should be one of the easier parts of his job. Due to personal reasons, Williams retired last week. That makes second-year pro Olu Oluwatimi the starter at center. During the 2023 season, and 2024 training camp, Oluwatimi was not good.
On TikTok, Britt created a video where he wondered how quickly someone could gain 50 pounds in order to potentially play center in the league. He then adds, "I'm down to try. (Seattle) call me."
Britt is not going to be playing for the Seahawks any time soon, nor any other team. Though he is just 33 years old, he struggled with injuries for most of the last four years of his career. After he was released by the Houston Texans in the 2023 offseason, Britt decided to retire. He has slimmed down quite a bit and is in no physical condition to currently play in the NFL.
Still, Britt's general idea is not a bad one. The Seahawks are going to have to do something to fix many parts of the offensive line, including center. What is doubtful is that Oluwatimi will suddenly be good and the long-term answer at his position. Seattle might need to make signing a center a priority this offseason, maybe even someone who did not play much in 2024.
