Seahawks should pass on thinking of signing this pass rush specialist

Seemingly older than his real age.

The Seattle Seahawks, like nearly every other NFL team, can use more high-end pass-rush help. Seattle has a couple of good young edge rushers, Derick Hall and Boye Mafe, but veteran Uchenna Nwosu seems to get injured far too often. While Mafe and Hall are somewhat productive, they also rank nowhere near the best edge rushers in the league.

One player who once did is rumored to likely be a free agent this offseason, but Seattle needs to pass on him should he be released by his current team. According to ESPN's Dan Graziano, Los Angeles Chargers edge rusher Joey Bosa could very well be let go by his team. He has been oft-injured, and releasing him saves LA $25,360,000 if he is released before free agency in March.

Otherwise, Bosa would be owed a roster bonus of $12,360,000. That seems far too high for a player who appeared in 14 games this past season, but that was his highest number of games played since 2021. In those 14 games, Bosa had just five sacks and 13 quarterback hits. Those are the lowest numbers of his career in any season he has played at least 12 games.

Seahawks should not entertain trying to sign Joey Bosa if he becomes a free agent

There is little doubt that the five-time Pro Bowler has been an elite player in the NFL, but while he might only be 30 years old when the 2025 season begins, his body seems closer to his mid-30s. Expecting Bosa to stay healthy and productive is a massive risk. Plus, he is still going to want to get paid a good amount of money, though not anywhere near his current figure for next season.

The Chargers are also dealing with Khalil Mack's free agency, so the team might make keeping or restructuring Bosa a priority. Still, passing up a saving of $25 million might not be easy.

The Seahawks, of course, are over the projected salary cap in 2025, even with the cap expected to be higher than originally thought. Seattle is going to have to release players (maybe even Nwosu) to create cap room. Assuming Bosa becomes a free agent, Seattle should definitely not chase him in free agency.

Seattle needs to spend more wisely and address the offensive line first. If the team does add an edge rusher, it will more likely be a rotation player. Or, Seattle could draft one early in the 2025 NFL draft. Either way, overspending for an oft-injured and seemingly less productive version of Joey Bosa would be a mistake.
