The Seattle Seahawks made the wise move of signing punter Michael Dickson to another extension. The deal is for four years beyond 2025, so Dickson will be in Seattle through at least 2029. Likely, well beyond that.
But Dickson's contract extension could be the start of a trend for Seattle. There is a break between minicamp and training camp in late July, so why not use that time to work out new deals with players currently on the roster?
Doing so might save the team money in the long term as the players below are capable of having fantastic 2025 seasons, thereby increasing the amount they will ask for next offseason. These three players should be the next to sign extensions with the Seahawks.
The Seahawks need to think about signing these three players to contract extensions
Cornerback Riq Woolen
Woolen can be a mercurial player who doesn't always set a hard edge against the run. He was also benched for the first series of Week 16 last year after breaking an unspecified team rule. But his raw numbers are difficult to match for other NFL cornerbacks.
His career passer rating allowed is an extraordinarily low 68.8. He has 11 interceptions but allowed just 12 touchdowns. He gets lost in coverage at times, but his agent can easily sell a team on his client's productivity.
Perhaps 2025 looks a lot like Woolen's standout rookie season of 2022. If that's the case, he is going to earn a large contract. It's better to wrap him up now than try next offseason.
Edge rusher Boye Mafe
Mafe has been a good player, but he appears to have a cap on his productivity. He has also proven to be a first-half player as far as seasons go. In 2023 and 2024 combined, Mafe had 11 sacks before Week 10 of those seasons. After Week 10, Mafe has only four combined sacks.
Is his issue conditioning or an inability to adjust once opposing offenses adjust to him> He has the size and speed to be consistently disruptive, but hasn't been. That could all change in 2025, the final year of his rookie contract.
Should the 26-year-old have a breakout season, he is going to cost a pretty penny to re-sign. Singing him now should mean the Seahawks get a less expensive deal, as Mafe has not firmly established himself. The risk of extending him is worth it because he could become very good.
Safety Coby Bryant
While Seattle chose Nick Emmanwori in the second round of the 2025 draft, and he might eventually, and perhaps sooner rather than later, become the starter at safety opposite Julian Love, that doesn't mean the team should get rid of Bryant. Plus, signing him to an extension this offseason might be financially a smart move.
Had Bryant been a free agent this offseason, he would have had some potential suitors, but not gotten paid much. Another year in Mike Macdonald's system could change that. Bryant was very good after becoming the full-time starter near the midway point of last season, and he should be better this coming season.
Keeping Bryant, who had a quarterback rating allowed of only 77.3 in 2024 and whiffed on only 5.2 percent of his tackles, allows Macdonald to have a lot of versatility among his safety group for the foreseeable future. Bryant might also be a lot more expensive next offseason with another good season.
Not on this list, obviously, are running back Kenneth Walker III and right tackle Abraham Lucas. The reason is that they have long injury histories and need to prove this coming season that they can stay healthy. If they can, the Seahawks need to try to re-sign them next offseason.
