Many national rankings of the Seattle Seahawks running back group leave an important part out. Those rankings often state that Zach Charbonnet would be considered the starter, but the team might not have him back by Week 1. As 12s know, Charbonnet is unlikely to return until December.
This is one reason Seattle choosing Jadarian Price in the first round was so important. Seattle couldn't wait until pick 64 to take Price, as the running back group was thin in this year's draft, and Price likely would have been gone by then. Price isn't just replacing Kenneth Walker, who signed with the Kansas City Chiefs, but Charbonnet too.
Another important step general manager John Schneider took this offseason was signing Emanuel Wilson in free agency. Wilson got solid reps with the Green Bay Packers and fills the void left by Charbonnet, who injured his knee in the playoffs last season. Schneider and the Seahawks prepared for the absence of the two lead backs from 2025. They could also sign Nick Chubb.
Seattle Seahawks should kick the tires on signing Nick Chubb
Chubb has an injury history, of course, and that is one reason that, at age 30, he is still a free agent now. But the running back is also the exact kind of backup that the Seahawks need. He is a veteran presence who, while no longer overly explosive, can grind out the dirty yards to help pick up first downs. He isn't a Pro Bowler, but Seattle doesn't need that.
After rushing for more than 1,000 yards from 2019 through 2022 with the Cleveland Browns, Chubb began having one injury after another. He only played in two games in 2023 and eight in 2024. Last season with the Houston Texans, the running back started nine games and played in 15.
Was he elite? Not at all. He ran for 506 yards, though he did average 4.1 yards per carry. He's never been a highly efficient receiver out of the backfield, but he caught 13 passes too.
Those kinds of numbers might not impress, but they don't need to. If Jadarian Price proves he can pass protect in training camp and the preseason, he should be the starter for many years to come. Charbonnet will miss most of the season and is a free agent next offseason. Wilson might be a solid backup, and George Holani too, but why not bring Chubb in for a look based on his past?
The cost to sign an aging running back would be minimal. In other words, it costs relatively little to sign Chubb. At best, he will be a valuable backup. At worst, he has proven to the Seattle Seahawks he can't be.
