Until further notice, the Seattle Seahawks will be considered the team to beat in the NFC West. However, with so many dangerous teams in the division, they still need to keep an eye on everything the rest of the bunch does.
As such, they should be paying close attention to the never-ending Brandon Aiyuk saga. The San Francisco 49ers are struggling to find any takers for the former star wide receiver, and they may have to cut ties with him.
That's where general manager John Schneider could swoop right in and make him the ultimate victory cigar. The Seahawks could use another bona fide pass catcher, and he will probably be available at a major discount.
The Seattle Seahawks should make a run at Brandon Aiyuk if he's cut
The 49ers haven't been in a rush to dump Aiyuk, but they've made it loud and clear that he's never going to play for them again. They've also moved on by adding multiple wide receivers to the mix this offseason.
They don't have to do him any favors by releasing him now or trading him to his preferred destination. That said, he'll be dead weight and a distraction if they don't find any takers, so there might be a point where they'll have no choice but to release him.
Aiyuk has no love lost for his current team, and having an opportunity to stick it to them and beat them twice a season would be an enticing pitch. He can join the Seahawks on a cheap, "prove it" deal, knowing that he'll still get his salary from the 49ers.
That way, he can prove that he hasn't missed a step despite spending so much time on the sidelines. He'll show that he's healthy and will probably land a lucrative contract in the 2027 offseason, all while getting to play for a Super Bowl contender.
The Seahawks already have arguably the best pass catcher in the game in Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Cooper Kupp, while not the youngest or the fastest, has done a great job as his complement. That said, even the best things can be improved, and adding a former second-team All-Pro to help Sam Darnold would be a bit overkill.
Of course, this team doesn't need to do it, but it would certainly be a nice cherry on top of the sundae. Not only would they be adding a dangerous possession receiver and YAC specialist, but they'd also be getting the best of a divisional rival. They can certainly afford him, and there would be no downside to making a run at him.
