The Seattle Seahawks already made some major changes to the offense this offseason, and more are coming. They've made it abundantly clear that quarterback Geno Smith will not be one of those changes.
I think it's safe to say that when you send your offensive coordinator back to college, that's a major change, right, 12s? I'm not going to crap on Grubb and say he was a bad OC, but it's pretty clear that he wasn't the right person for the job in Seattle. His philosophy never meshed with head coach Mike Macdonald. From all appearances, it looks like the Hawks have the right person now in Klint Kubiak.
There's still a lot of uncertainty as to what happens next in Seattle. Even after renegotiating Leonard Williams' contract, the Hawks are still 19 million over the cap, per spotrac.com. As he almost always does, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times provided an exceptional breakdown of the Seahawks' situation at quarterback. The only thing that's changed since then is that Geno Smith now has not one, but two ringing endorsements as the Hawks QB for 2025 and beyond.
Geno Smith is the Seahawks QB for at least the near future
You don't have to take my word for that statement. Head coach Mike Macdonald made it clear that he believes that Smith is the right player to lead the Seahawks back to the playoffs. While it's true that Macdonald, unlike Pete Carroll, doesn't have the final say in the Hawks roster, it would be insane to think that GM John Schneider doesn't value his input.
Another reason to believe that Smith will stay in Seattle is the ringing endorsement he received from the Seahawks new offensive coordinator, Klint Kubiak. At the press conference introducing Kubiak to the media - and more importantly, the 12s - he gave Smith so much praise, you'd think he'd coached him since Pop Warner. When a coach says that one player played a major factor in him accepting a new job, you should probably pay attention.
Kubiak said, "Geno's a very aggressive player. Has a lot of production. Obviously, he's been doing it for a long time. He's overcome a lot in his career. I have a lot of respect for Geno. It was a huge draw to come here and be able to get to coach him alongside [quarterbacks coach] Andrew Janocko." Sounds to me that the new OC is pretty excited to get to work with his new quarterback, and get the most out of him, as well as the team.
Are there some things Smith needs to clean up? Oh, for sure, and he's always been the first to admit that. Geno Smith has always been a team-first guy. Even when a teammate clearly cut off a route too soon - hi there, DK - Smith took the blame. I can't wait to see what the offense can do this season with Kubiak and Smith leading the way.
