The Seattle Seahawks' 2021 NFL draft was atrocious. In many ways, it was the end of a run of poor choices by the team, something that would affect the changes Seattle would soon make. In 2021, the team had just three draft picks. None are still with the team.
The most disappointing was the second-round pick, wide receiver D'Wayne Eskridge. He was often hurt and extremely inefficient when he did play. He was released before his rookie deal was up, and he is currently flaming out with the Miami Dolphins.
Fourth-round pick Tre Brown showed the most promise at the beginning of his Seahawks career. The cornerback played in five games as a rookie and was beginning to apply sticky coverage until a knee injury ended his season, and affected the start of his second year. He appeared in only six games.
As Seattle only had three picks, they needed the first two (offensive line Stone Forsythe was the last choice, but not until the sixth round) to work out well. If healthy, Brown might have done so, but two straight seasons that were injury-impacted set him back.
Former Seattle Seahawks cornerback Tre Brown sees his time with the 49ers end
Still, he had his chances in years three and four, but after beginning as a starter, he was forced to the bench through inconsistent coverage and poor tackling. This past offseason, he signed with the San Francisco 49ers. After doing so, he implied some not-very-nice things about the Seahawks.
Perhaps this was simply because he was now about to play on Seattle's NFC West rival. Fair enough. But the 49ers might have been a bit more wary of signing the cornerback. When given his chance to play for Seattle, he failed. Before that, he was hurt.
To be fair, one should never want a player to get injured. Professional athletes make their living from being talented enough to play a game, just as some of us make good claims adjusters, waiters, or radio hosts. We shouldn't want any of those people to have their livelihoods affected by health, either.
But an employer might be a bit more risk-averse if a person couldn't show up to work regularly. They have a business to run. San Francisco should have been a bit more nervous about adding Tre Brown.
Unfortunately for the player, he has suffered another injury and has been placed on season-ending injured reserve. The cornerback has a heel injury. The 28-year-old cornerback was only signed for one season, so one might wonder if Brown's career is done.
