The toughest cuts are the deepest.

Many of us in life are grinders. We may not have elite skills at what we do professionally, but we still find a way to be successful by using the best of what we have. That is the case with Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Cody White.

White has endeared himself to 12s for the last three seasons by being a good contributor on special teams and never getting much of a chance to do anything offensively. Since he entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2020 out of Michigan State, the most receptions White has had in a season was five with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022.

Last season, he played in 10 games and had his most receiving yards in a season, which was 90, mostly due to catching a 60-yard touchdown pass in Week 9 from quarterback Sam Darnold. His statistics aren't flashy because, after all, Cody White is a grinder trying to find the niche that will keep him employed by an NFL team.

Cody White might have to find his way to the Seattle Seahawks practice squad again

Since coming to Seattle in 2023, he has had the same fate. He gets waived either before or early in a season and then is re-signed to the practice squad. He always clears waivers after initially being released.

He could see the same scenario unfold in 2026, too. Even after wide receiver Jake Bobo, a player similar to White in that he doesn't catch many passes but is the kind of glue guy that every successful team needs, hurt his knee and will miss the entire season, White could be released in favor of Montorie Foster Jr.

The reason is straightforward, as the Seahawks know they can waive Cody White only to plan on re-signing him to the practice squad. The same might not happen with Foster, an undrafted free agent in 2025 who has had a very good training camp this year as a receiver.

White did better than Foster in preseason Week 3 against the Kansas City Chiefs, though. The former was targeted four times by quarterback Jalen Milroe and caught three of those. The only one he didn't catch was because of a fantastic play by a KC defender who knocked the ball away just before White was about to reel it in for a touchdown.

White's three catches resulted in 69 yards receiving, 17 of which came after he caught the ball. Foster was targeted just twice and caught the ball once for 13 yards.

Still, the damage throughout training camp and the preseason had probably been done. If either makes the roster when final cuts are made on August 30, it will likely be Foster, a part-time substitute school teacher and real estate agent. He is a great story, and a good player.

Cody White is also a good story for the Seattle Seahawks, though. He is quick to smile and willing to do whatever he can to get reps. Eventually, he probably will, but he might have to start on the practice squad again.
