Bobby Wagner is back in Seattle, just not with the Seahawks. Maybe one day the former six-time All-Pro with the Seahawks will retire with the franchise, but for now, his presence will be felt in the city in a different manner altogether.
News broke on Wednesday that Wagner was joining the ownership group for the city’s WNBA franchise, the Seattle Storm.
“I’m really excited to be a part of the WNBA,” Wagner said via The Athletic. “I think it’s a great time. I’ve always watched from afar, being in Seattle, so I’m really excited to be a part of the growth and stay connected to a community that I still love.”
Seahawks icon Bobby Wagner’s Seattle legacy enters a new chapter
Wagner joins an elite cast of sports stars with ownership stakes in the league that has blossomed in popularity over the past year. That cast includes Tom Brady, Dwyane Wade, and Magic Johnson, who expressed his gratitude for Wagner’s interest in the league.
I would like to congratulate our Washington Commanders star linebacker, Bobby Wagner, on joining the WNBA’s Seattle Storm ownership group. I am so proud of Bobby! We’ve had so many discussions on entrepreneurship and this is just the start of him building his empire! pic.twitter.com/w0cfkM4iAS

The linebacker even called Johnson a "mentor" in the process after initially running the idea by the legendary basketball player.
Wagner expressed that his investment in the WNBA via the Seattle Storm is about much more than the financial opportunity to join the league at such a critical moment of growth in viewership and interest. The league's popularity is rightfully growing. People want to be involved.
“This is about more than basketball,” Wagner said, according to The Athletic’s Seahawks reporter Michael-Shawn Duggar. “It’s about investing in a legacy of excellence, empowering women, and continuing to elevate the game for future generations.”
It is also telling that Wagner could have chosen any number of WNBA franchises to join, but still felt such a connection with Seattle to purchase a part of the Storm, a team that has won the WNBA title four times. The city has strong support for the team, too. Wagner's buy-in is a win-win for all involved.
Wagner is still going strong as he enters his 14th NFL season, his second with the Washington Commanders. He spent 11 of those seasons in Seattle, where he won a Super Bowl, recorded 1,566 tackles, and racked up countless other accolades. His Commanders will host the Seahawks in Week 9 on Sunday Night Football.
