Even though he was no longer a clear-cut starter in Seattle, losing Riq Woolen might be a big blow to the Seattle Seahawks' secondary. Devon Withserpoon is a mainstay, and Josh Jobe will likely start on the other side, but they're quite thin at the position.
General manager John Schneider might aim for help in the NFL Draft, but with just four selections in the entire event, he may not be able to get the best player or best fit. He'll likely have to keep an eye out in the free agent pool.
Should that be the case, then the Seahawks could make a run at L'Jarius Sneed. He's coming off two down years, but he used to be a shutdown defender in his heyday, and he may only need a change of scenery.
The Seattle Seahawks can afford to bet on L'Jarius Sneed
Just three years ago, the Kansas City Chiefs drew backlash for moving on from Sneed, who had been an instrumental contributor to two Super Bowl wins. Unfortunately for him, he never got a chance to make them regret that move, as he was banged up and inefficient with the Tennessee Titans.
That, however, makes him a perfect bargain for a team that's already pretty stacked on both sides of the field. Head coach Mike Macdonald and defensive coordinator Aden Durde have two of the sharpest defensive minds in the game, and they can probably help him revive his career with a one-year "prove it" type of deal.
When healthy, Sneed was a true ball-hawk, logging ten total interceptions in his first four seasons in the league, including at least two per season. Notably, he hasn't picked off a single pass since he left Missouri.
The Seahawks should be just fine with Witherspoon, Emmanwori, and Jobe handling business, but all players are always one snap from suffering a season-ending injury. This team can't afford to roll into next season without depth at such a crucial position, and with limited options in free agency, they might as well roll the dice on someone worth saving.
In the worst-case scenario, they can always pull the plug on him after just one season. If things work out, the Seahawks can have another show-stopper to rotate onto the field for their never-stopping revolving door of different looks and disguised coverages. Also, that would allow them to use their limited draft capital to attend to other issues.
